Birth Defects.

The reason why it is so important for you to have regular medical check-ups in your fourth month is that any signs of birth defects can be detected early on. One of the main tests that your doctor might suggest you have is the AFP (Alpha-fetoprotein) test which depending upon the level of this in your blood stream can warn you of the following:

* Low levels: Down Syndrome;
* High levels: spina bifida (Abnormality with the spinal column);

: anencephaly (dysfunction with brain where parts or all of it may be missing).

It is important to remember that this test will not cause any harm to you or your baby and it is not in any way painful. However, it is only a preliminary test and should there be high or low levels of AFP found in your system, further tests can be carried out to identify the risks of certain defects becoming a reality.
